The joy of vacation! Gave me a moment to collect my thoughts and get some down on paper. Back to the grind this week.
I’m going to put some of the blame on your book, Deep Rooted Wisdom. It really got me fired up about the growing season. It’s been a few years since I’ve had a passion for gardening like I have this year. Thank you for your work and thank you for reading. Looking forward to your new book!
My mother-in-law made it just like BG & I didn’t realize it until I tried that recipe. I looked forward to her squash casserole at family gatherings more than anything else. I was blown away when someone told me about this recipe.
Goodness - just looking at all that wonderful produce made me tired! I remember working full-time and trying to keep up with the garden. I finally had to change how much I was planting. The squash recipe looks delish! Take care of yourself and thanks for sharing.
Yes! For the past several years I’ve tried to get Hubby to grow a smaller garden. Before we moved to the farm we had manageable gardens that we enjoyed working in together but I guess all the space here & the small tractor fueled his market garden dreams but we don’t live in an area that values organic produce. The nearest farmer’s markets are 45min away & I’ve never considered that profitable as our most valuable resource is time. Plus we need more infrastructure like a walk-in cooler. We’ve discussed this every winter for the past 5 years but spring fever hits him every time and this year he added a 3rd garden space. I want to shift gears to orchards and wild flowers. Wish me luck in convincing him.
It's a shame that more people don't understand how important organically grown food is for their bodies, the soil, and wildlife. I live in an a region where it is valued so our farmer's markets thrive.
Wishing you whatever you need to make it more workable!
Such a beautiful harvest of farm produce. I can't imagine working full time and processing all that! Smart woman to take a week off to recalibrate. I have a tiny garden, but it's all I can handle with 1 zucchini and a couple tomatoes at a time. Thanks for the squash recipe.
This all started right after Covid when hubby was on-farm full time and I was working remotely part-time. We could handle it then but last summer & this summer we’ve both been working full time off-farm. It’s just not possible to keep up. I miss our smaller, intimate gardens. Hopefully I’m steering hubby back in that direction. I’m planning for orchards & wild flowers next summer. Thanks for reading. Happy gardening!
Thanks for reading, Janisse. No matter what my bank account says, the garden always makes me feel unbelievably rich, safe and secure knowing we can eat well. Also, knowing this land has provided for generations of my family for at least 75 years gives me a rootedness and connection to my food that few people understand but I know you do. 💜
I'm worn out, just reading this! How on earth do you have time to tend a big garden, process the harvest, work full-time, AND sit down to write about it all?! I'm in awe.
I guffawed at "the author and her zucchini triplets."
Wow! Im amazed you found time to make and share this beautiful post.

Thank you for all of this. Yes, a big garden and processing the abundance is- seasonally, at least - a full-time job!
Hubby says I moan & groan about it now but I sure am happy when we’re eating so well in the winter.
I love BG’s Alabama Squash recipe too 😊👍

What abundance! Your garden is absolutely amazing. I will try your fridge pickle recipe on my next batch!
And I’m going to try your squash casserole recipe next week!
Thanks for reading!

I get that spring fever, too!

This is a post full of riches. Thank you for all the recipes, especially Squash Alabama. I'm on that one. Truly, thank you, Becki.
