Breathe in…….Breathe out
Aching shoulders
Breathe in…….Breathe out
Aching hips
Breathe in…….Breathe out
Aching knees, aching ankles
Breathe in…….Breathe out
Oh, but what a wonderful weekend it was with the grand boys!
I’m busy cleaning up and getting ready for the work week ahead but since I needed to take some Motrin to keep moving, I decided I would sit down and write a few minutes while I wait for the medicine to kick in.
This weekend was the first time both boys spent the night with us and it just made me think back to spending the night at my Granny’s and what about it made it so special. It was never a big production. We didn’t go places and see new things. But something about staying with Granny was a magical experience. If there was a sibling or cousin staying over too, Granny would make us a pallet in the living room to sleep on. It wasn’t made of straw like in the olden days. It was just a thick stack of blankets. Did you spend the night at your grandparents’ and sleep on a pallet?
Our boys are lucky, we got them a trifold memory foam mattress. I tried an air mattress when the older grand son, Colen, spent the night once, but since there will always be bed jumping when you have little boys, I didn’t see how that was going to last. It was also cold to sleep on in winter and quite noisy. I know this because when Colen spent the night with us that once, I had the air mattress on the floor beside our bed and he ended up sleeping in our bed while I slept on the air mattress. The memory foam mattress covered with a soft microfiber blanket, was so cozy and comfy. They slept all the way through the night.
I remember sleeping on that pallet in the living room and waking up in the middle of the night thinking there was a monster in the back bedroom with Granny. Of course, it was just her loud, deep snoring. I worried the boys may wake up and hear me snoring and think the same thing, so I slept very lightly last night. The younger grand son, Corey, had a little congestion and coughing fit. I got up, grabbed a cloth, ran it under warm water. Then I dug out my Granny’s Mentholatum. That jar is probably older than I am. I went into the living room. Wiped his little face with the warm cloth & rubbed his back down with the eucalyptus smelling rub. I put a swipe under my own nose as well, since I’ve been dealing with some sinus issues the past couple of weeks. Within a few minutes his cough was quieted and he didn’t have another fit all night. I always put it on their back so they don’t accidentally rub it in their eyes.
The next morning, Granny would get up and cook us breakfast. I made the boys grilled cheese sandwiches, knowing they probably wouldn’t eat them. They have a very limited diet, and I did not have any of their regular items on hand. Corey ate a few bites but mostly they were happy to be outside running in the dew covered grass. Chasing each other, playing games, letting the chickens out, feeding Daisy Mae (the non milk cow), and just being little wild boys.
They went home a little before lunch. I hope they get to come again soon. I pray I give them all the wonderful, magical feelings I had from spending the night with my Granny. They’ve worn this Granny out, but I love every minute I get to spend with them. I won’t be with them their entire life, but I hope they feel and remember all the love I have for them long after I am gone.
