This is a raw and rough draft from a writing workshop I attended this afternoon. I’ve been experiencing a bit of writer’s block and I’m hoping this afternoon that I’ve spent with like-minded folks has unlocked some stuff. This is a piece from a 15-minute free flow.
On the weathered back deck of my swamp sanctuary, a dusky grey cat with wicked green eyes lays sprawled out in the shade. A few feet away, her pot-bellied tabby-striped kitten is also sprawled panting quickly. Something catches the corner of my eye as another scrawnier tabby kitten moseys up to mama kitty for a drink.
I wander around the disheveled house and find a couple of bowls. One I fill with cool water and the other I open a can of Friskies catfood and dump in adding some dry food on top. I place the bowls in the shade and go back inside.
My swamp sanctuary only has one room which is habitable in this heat. The buzz of the little Frigidaire window unit is annoying but this shady space in the swamp inspires me like no other.
I watch the birds eating the tent caterpillars in the old hickory tree that rises from the swamp to meet the sky. A cat bird and a family of prothonotary warblers visiting each mass of webbing that is full of little worms. I suppose this is their fast food pick up. Easy to teach the fledglings how to feed themselves here.
I recently finished painting the walls of my writing room. Purple continues to inspire me. 💜💜💜
I hope to start sharing more in the future. It will be interesting to come back to this little sketch and expound on it some day. Thanks for sticking with me through my little hiatus. More to come soon…
Many blessings to you and yours,
B 🌸💜🌺
I love this--especially the fledglings learning to find food!
So glad you got your juices flowing, Becki! I need to do the same. I loved the details on the cats, birds, and tent caterpillars. You go, girl! I’m ready for more.
